Alrighty, I haven't updated since August, and I think that has been far too long, so I'll give everyone who still reads this thing an update.
I'm in my senior year at Westfield. Turns out I accidentally picked up a second minor (English Writing), so I've got that going for me, I guess. This semester is the first semester where I've really been challenged and been covered in work. Mostly just from my screenwriting course. The main assignment in class is to write a 90 page screenplay. I finally finished it this past week, now we're doing the revisions process for the rest of the semester. It's definitely not incredible or anything, but I'm just happy that I got 93 pages out there, it's linear, and makes sense. It doesn't have to be the best thing ever as long as its done.
The rest of the semester hasn't been all that overbearing, to be honest. Pretty much standard fare, and I find myself surprisingly enjoying the Journalism classes I'm taking a lot more than I thought I would be. I initially just picked up the journalism concentration because I had the free time, but now I'm actually considering trying it for a career, but who knows. I guess I'll have to see what happens post graduation.
It looks like next semester I'm going to be doing a nine credit internship at a newspaper out here, The Springfield Republican, likely in the Arts and Entertainment section. I think that's the spot for me if I do turn to writing for a career. I'm not political enough to write in Washington, I don't give a shit about local soft news, and I'm certainly not a sports guy. I'd ideally like to review Music and Film for a living, kind of the Robert Christgau track, despite my thinking that he's an unbearable douchebag. I don't want to get too ahead of myself or anything, but I dunno. If something in journalism turned into a career, I don't think I could really complain. Anyways, on top of that internship, I'm only taking two other classes: Intro to Photography, and News Editing. That would be really cool if my News Editing class weren't at 8:15 twice a week. But alas, it's the last semester, so I really shouldn't complain (except for about my soon unemployed ass).
The band is promising. We've been playing as much as we can with my being at school. Usually a few shows a month at least, and now we're planning a small winter tour over my Christmas break, I think it's only going to be four or five days, but it's really nice to go out and play shows. That's what I'd really like to do after I graduate, but I think my father would crucify me if I tried it, so we'll see. Here's to hoping that we sell out (both integrity wise, and large stadiums).
On a similar note, I'm going to be recording my solo album over winter break as well. I recently got a nice little firewire recording interface for my computer, and I'm hoping to get a few microphones with whatever (if any...) Christmas money that I get. I really don't plan on doing anything with it I don't think, I just want to get it done. I don't have a backing band so shows are just this side of impossible (unless I wanted to play by myself. I don't.), who knows. Maybe I'll be able to cherry pick people from other bands and get some shows where I play guitar again.
Sara and I are still going great, and I honestly haven't been happier in my entire life. We're coming up on eight months in like a week and a half, and really, not to gush or anything, but goddamn, I love this girl. Now I know what all those fucking songwriters were talking about in the 60's. Love is pretty sweet, if you have the means, I highly suggest it.
Anyways. Here I sit in my room, alone on a Friday night (Sara's working tonight...), drinking a beer and listening to a Tom Waits concert. It's not the worst way to spend a night, and I had a relatively productive day, so I don't know. Maybe I'll just keep doing this tonight. Stay in, have a drink, and listen to something relaxing. Unless someone gets in touch with me out here (they won't) it's probably what's going to be happening.
The only real downside to the last couple of days was my car breaking down yesterday just as I pulled back into school from the supermarket. It had been acting kind of weird the last few days, then suddenly all of my lights faded, my battery light came on, all my other dashboard lights came on, then they all suddenly shut off as I lost power steering. Luckily, I drifted the car to the side of the entrance road to the school and called AAA. A day and $293.42 later, and I have a brand new Alternator. I think it was destined to happen sometime, and at least I wasn't on the highway I guess.
Well, anyways, maybe I'll keep in touch in here a bit more, as it seems to be a trend with some other friends.
